# Subscriptions

> Create subscription plans that bill customers automatically on a recurring cadence.

## What subscriptions do

A subscription plan bills enrolled customers automatically on a repeating cadence, such as monthly. You define the plan once (what it includes and how often it charges), then enroll customers into it. Their card or bank account is charged each cycle without you creating a new invoice each time.

Find plan management in the sidebar under **Subscriptions > Subscriptions**. The customers enrolled in your plans live under [Subscribers](/help/shared/subscribers).

## Creating a plan

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start a new plan">
    Go to **Subscriptions > Subscriptions** and click **New plan**. The plan saves as a draft, so nothing charges until you publish it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name and describe the plan">
    Give the plan a **name** (for example, Monthly Membership) and an optional **description** of what subscribers get and how often.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the billing cadence">
    Choose how often the plan charges, such as monthly, from the **Billing cadence** dropdown. The summary panel shows the resulting price and cadence.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add line items">
    Under **Line items**, search your saved items and set a quantity and unit price. The price per cycle is the total of the line items. A plan needs a name and at least one line item before it can be saved.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose visibility, then save">
    Decide whether to list the plan publicly (see below), then click **Save draft**. Publish the plan when you are ready for it to go live.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Public catalog

Each plan has a **List in public catalog** option:

* **On** lets anyone browse the plan and self-subscribe from your public catalog page.
* **Off** keeps the plan hidden, so it can only be used where you enroll customers yourself.

The plan summary shows the current catalog status as either shown or hidden.

## Draft and published plans

A new plan starts as a **draft** and does not charge anyone. Publishing makes it live so customers can be enrolled and billing can begin. Keeping a plan as a draft is useful while you are still deciding on pricing or line items.

<Note>
  Changing a plan affects future billing on that plan. Set the cadence and line items carefully before publishing and enrolling customers.
